Life's A Drag... Excelencia Española, Walt Disney World & Shakespeare!
Dressed as what? A girl? Yes! Dating back to Shakespearean times, that little acronym, 'D.R.A.G' has been used to describe the art of male to female presenting get up! España returned with 'una segunda temporada' with 'excelencia' served on the 'Drag Race España' main-stage and more! All Winners? Yes, 7th heaven awaited us! How do those at Disney World serve Drag?! ¡Adelante!
With the success of the first season, Drag Race España was renewed soon after the first winner was announced as 'Carmen Farala!' The second season served us twelve excitable queens for the win, with one queen changing the game for good! Hailing from Barcelona, 'Sharonne' brought a level of professionalism to Spain's second series! Fat and Divine? Those are the words of 'Estrella Xtravaganza', serving up an honest and self-deprecating energy with humour at the centre of her core! TV is better when it's in COLOUR! Originally hailing for the Dominican Republic, 'Diamante Merybrown' wowed us with her talent show performance without question! ¿Quieres postre? Make hers a Ballantines! 'Samantha Ballantines' had my heart from day one with her unstoppable sense of humour, that queen sashayed away much too soon! 'Ariel Rec' continued from her Drag relative, 'Killer Queen!' 'Marina' served Spanish 'Non-Binary Finery' for the gods! Clearly stepping up, these girls had paid attention to season one, they were ready!
'Drag Sethlas' from 'Las Palmas de Gran Canaria' gave us a show, her humility and controversial garments gave us life! The 'bearded queen' came through for Spain during the second series, 'Venedita Von Dash' proved to use that both masculine and feminine elements can be merged into a Drag look! Representing both Spain and Belgium, the first Trans queen walked into the Spanish Werkroom with no apologises to make! That powerhouse was 'Juriji De Klee!' 'Jota Carajota' broke the mould, becoming the first Spanish queen to be from a 'Romani' descent, giving us a certain Jerez flavour! Did that shawl really belong to 'Lola Flores?' 'Onyx' served us 'Intergalactic Overness' with her own special mastermind of Drag! 'Marisa Prisa' went home first just like 'The Macarena' did in season one but we now see 'Maca' present '¡Si lo digo! The 'Porkchop' queen always reigns supreme! So far this second season has served true 'Drag Excellence' without question, this franchise has my heart! ¡Temporada Tercera! ¿Dónde estás?
Oh, Mickey! Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida in the United States of America, well that 'Magic Kingdom' serves more Drag than your local bar could ever! From 'Disney Princesses' to the everyday 'Cast Members', there's no other place quite like it in this turning world! I had the immense pleasure to be part of the 'magic' during the summer of 2011, now looking back I was then fronted with my very own 'Disney Drag!' Reporting to my first shift at 'EPCOT' had me walking into that gargantuan 'costume' department! I had two 'costumes', they would be co-ordinated with the four locations where I would be stationed throughout my work placement period. I loved my 'outlandish' and 'kooky' Disney costumes because Disney doesn't call them 'uniforms' neither do they use the word 'employee', I was called a 'cast member!' Part of the 'show' during those placement shifts, I played my own theatrical merchandise role! Now, let me tell you something! That was 'Drag!' Nobody else does it like Disney World, nobody could ever!
Those 'Character Performers' kept the magic alive as they became 'Friends With...' because that is how the many Disney Princesses would be presented in the Disney Parks. Jasmine and Aladdin, well their 'Friends With...' were so friendly and personable when I met them during my day 'playing' at 'EPCOT!' Those 'Friends With..' characters such as 'Goofy' and 'Woody' get up into a different kind of 'Disney Drag', each 'Friends With...' has their own procedure. Yes, you wouldn't believe the standards Disney works to maintain such excellence, their 'Drag' is worthy of an 'AllStars' performance on 'RuPaul's' own 'Drag Race!' Each Disney character has their own designated 'look', some 'Friends With' always adhere to such guidelines to keep looking just like 'Cinderella' or 'Tiana' from the Disney Classics. Like it or not, Disney serves amazing 'Drag' that has no bounds but always plays by the style rule book! From those 'Friends With' to then little old me when I was at 'Future World North', we all served our own 'Disney Drag!' Oh my Mickey!
She already done had herses! Had she though? As 'AllStars' whirled back into our lives, those 'All Winners' rumours were getting to be ridiculous! Sure, for 'AllStars 7', the 'fandom' had put out a petition to get Season 2 icon 'Nicole Paige Brooks' onto the show! Mother had us gagged with an eight queen 'All Winners' line-up, we had truly been dished up some serious 'Drag Race' excellence! Hailing from both previous 'AllStars', 'Drag Race UK' and the original U.S show, we had a bit of everything served for the seventh 'AllStars' rodeo! 'The Vivienne' had made here way through U.S Immigration to represent the United Kingdom after being the first winner of the UK show! Pandemic winner, 'Jaida Essence Hall' has so far served absolutely everything that's flawless! Cutting the right coins, 'Monet X Change' tried to dodge that 'Golden Plunger' but I know that her winning currency will hit the mark! Season 5 from the 'U.S Race', 'Jinx Monsoon' came back to show us the icon that has been touring the world! Mom has changed the rules! Ru!
'Season 9 & AllStars 5' legend, 'Shea Couleé' did not come to play any games! Keeping it real 'Odd', it continues to be a pleasure to see 'Yvie Oddly' amaze us with her 'off the wall looks' including 'Oddly's' Snatch Game dazzling 'Sexy Boogeyman! Dinner has been dished up good and proper this season, Mom has us all well fed and catered for! Reclaiming her title, I was completely gassed to see 'Season 3' winner, 'Raja Gemini' reprise her role as a complete icon, legend and superstar on 'RuPaul's Drag Race' ten years since her winning season first took place! That's how you make a 'Comeback!' Joining her 'Twinner' from 'AllStars 4', 'Trinity' has her 'Tuck' well and truly snatched tightly for a possible 'AllStars 7' victory! Yes, Mom has gone and changed up those 'AllStars' rules because we haven't seen those dreaded lipsticks yet, it has been all about that 'Golden Plunger' and those 'Legendary Legend Stars!' I want to see how this turns out! 'Naomi Campbell' had me gooped as she appeared as the first guest judge! Nancy Pelosi? O!
The Great British playwright, 'William Shakespeare' had to work around the politics of the church doing the late 16th and early 17th century's because women were not allowed to act! Sure, those rules were stupid but 'Bill Shakespeare' had to get extra men to get up into 'D.R.A.G!' Yes, that acronym breaks down as 'Dressed As Girl' and that is what had to happen during those formative years of theatre within the realms of Shakespeare. We still use the same saying today but as the art of 'Drag' has morphed into many different facets, it isn't just men dressing as women, no we've come a long way! During the time of Shakespeare's fame, women weren't given the power that they deserved but they were very much part of those history breaking plays! Lady Macbeth in 'Macbeth' and Desdemona in 'Othello' both showcased strong female roles, it was just that during those early performances men played the roles of the women in 'Drag'. Although the possessive nature of the men didn't allow the women to truly shine bright. What!? Madness!
Taking a step back from Shakespeare's portrayal of women in his plays, it still stands as berserk that men were so casually playing female parts in drags! We still refer back to Shakespeare's 'D.R.A.G' play on words but on a much larger scale as female impersonation went on to thrive, doing more than just to survive with the art-form broadening much further than what Shakespeare ever had imagined! Girls might dress as boys and boys might well dress as girls, the boundaries of Drag have been smashed into a thousand million pieces because we have the foundation to take it higher. The beginnings of Shakespeare's Drag wouldn't meet to modern day standards but for the time, I wholeheartedly believe that William Shakespeare damn well started a revolution! Maybe I am biased by I am also British but here it goes because I'm going to say it! William Shakespeare went and created 16th/17th century drag without any apologises, he had to do what the time allowed him to do, he didn't make the rules, he turned them upside down! OK!
Dressed As Girl?... OK, Shakespeare!
